Ingredients Needed

Here are some notes on the ingredients used in this recipe:

  • Ground Beef (Mince): I use extra lean (5% fat) which has all that great flavour but lower in calories
  • Onion: just a regular white or brown onion
  • Bell Peppers: a mixture of both red and green bell peppers are used for colour and to add some veggies to the dish.
  • Garlic:fresh garlic minced, but lazy or jarred mince garlic is fine also.
  • Ginger: fresh finely grated ginger, but ginger paste can be used also.
  • Soy Sauce: This recipe calls for a blend of both light and dark soy sauce. Opt for high-quality Chinese brands to achieve the best flavour and colour; personally, I recommend Lee Kum Kee and Pearl River Bridge
  • Sambal Oelek: An Indonesian chili paste that packs a punch of flavour and heat, adding that extra kick to your dish.
  • Maple Syrup: used to add a little sweetness and balance the heat from the sambal oelek
  • Tomato Paste (Puree):a concentrated paste that comes in a tube or small can
  • Noodles: use either thin rice noodles or my preferred choice is spaghettini
  • Low Calorie Spray Oil: Use your preferred choice of low calorie spray, I prefer olive oil or avocado sprays without any added emulsifiers.
  • Spring Onions (Scallions) - green part of the onion only, used for a garnish

Once you've gathered all the ingredients and prepared them accordingly, you're all set to create this easy and delightful recipe.

Variations and Additions

Elevate your chilli beef noodles to new heights with these tantalizing variations and additions.

  1. Noodle Variations: Experiment with different types and shapes of noodles to switch up the texture and flavour. Try using egg noodles or a wider rice noodle.
  2. Protein Options: Instead of ground beef, try using pork or ground chicken or turkey for a lighter alternative. For a vegetarian twist, substitute the beef with meat free crumbles like quorn
  3. Additional Veggies: Feel free to add more vegetables to amp up the nutritional content and add variety to your dish. Consider tossing in some sliced mushrooms, shredded cabbage, or thinly sliced carrots for extra crunch and color.
  4. Spice Level: Adjust the spice level to suit your taste preferences. If you like it extra hot, increase the amount of Sambal Oelek or add a dash of red pepper flakes. For a milder version, reduce the amount of Sambal Oelek or omit it altogether.
  5. Crunchy Toppings: Top your noodles with some crushed peanuts or sesame seeds for added texture and flavor.
  6. Sauce Variations: Experiment with different sauces to customize the flavour profile of your dish. Try adding a splash of fish sauce for a savory umami kick, or drizzle some sesame oil for a nutty aroma.
  7. Fried Egg: For a hearty meal, top your chili beef noodles with a fried egg. The creamy yolk adds richness and depth to the dish.

These variations and additions allow you to customize your chilli beef noodles based on the ingredients you have available, creating a unique and exciting dish every time.

Best Pan for Stir Fries and Noodles

Selecting the right pan is crucial for achieving the best results when making stir-fry noodles. Here are some key considerations:

  • Large Flat-Bottomed Frying Pan: If you're using an electric hob, a large flat-bottomed frying pan is ideal for stir-frying noodles. This type of pan provides stability and ensures even heat distribution, resulting in perfectly cooked noodles without the risk of instability on the hob surface.
  • Wok: For those with a gas hob, a traditional wok is an excellent choice for stir-frying noodles. Its curved shape allows for easy tossing and stirring, ensuring that the ingredients cook evenly. Additionally, the high sides of the wok prevent ingredients from spilling out as you toss them.

Tips for Cooking Chilli Beef Noodles

Mastering this Chilli Beef Noodle recipe is easy with these straightforward tips:

  1. Prepare Noodles Thoughtfully: Once cooked, drain the noodles and lightly coat them with low-calorie spray to prevent sticking until ready for stir-frying.
  2. Prep Ingredients in Advance: Ensure all ingredients are prepped and ready before firing up the pan. This ensures a smooth cooking process without interruptions.
  3. Preheat Your Pan: Heat your pan adequately over medium-high heat before adding ingredients. This prevents sticking and ensures quick, even cooking.
  4. Maintain High Heat: Throughout the stir-frying process, keep the heat high to achieve optimal flavour and texture. Taking your time to properly brown the meat or protein adds richness and depth to the dish, enhancing both flavour and colour.
  5. Avoid Overcrowding: Resist the temptation to overcrowd the pan. Cooking in batches ensures everything gets evenly coated and prevents a soggy mess. Overcrowding also hinders the browning process.
  6. Follow Package Instructions: Different noodle brands may have varied cooking times and methods. Always refer to the package instructions for best results.
  7. Frequent Tossing: Ensure even cooking and prevent sticking by frequently tossing the noodles and ingredients with utensils. However, be cautious not to over-stir, as this could cause the ingredients to break apart.

By following these tips, you'll consistently produce delicious stir-fried noodle dishes with perfectly coated noodles and flavorful results. Happy cooking!

I'm not really a stir fry fan, but thought its nice to finally see one that you can do with mince rather than prawns or steak.

As I didnt have the two different Soy sauces, I just used one (Ketjap Manis) and instead of Chilli paste and Chilies I used Sambal (crushed chillie paste).

This was as always, truly delicious! My 3 year old loved it too!

    Thanks Britmum!

Cooked this for dinner tonight and it was scrumptious like all your recipes, didn't know what Pak Choi was so used shredded cabbage instead and it worked really well. I have used the China Dragon stir fry sauces in the past but will never use them again this was lovely and so easy to prepare. Thank you Britmum.

This was delicious, however far too hot for us and we like heat. Have doubled checked the recipe and its a tablespoon of sambal olek and a chilli is this right as it is really mouth burning , in fact we couldnt finish it as we were in pain!! Will definitely make again but will reduce the quantity of the sambal olek to a teaspoon or two.
