Cycling for a Cause: CSL's Alpha-1 Community Support
In a heartwarming display of solidarity and determination, CSL employees joined the Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency patient community in a memorable cycling adventure on Cape Cod during the 2025 Escape to the Cape Bike Trek.
The Alpha-1 Foundation's annual "Riding for a Reason" event, held every September, is a three-day cycling journey along the breathtaking coastal routes of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. This event serves a dual purpose: raising awareness about Alpha-1, a rare lung and liver disease, and generating funds to support crucial research. Many patients suffer from breathing difficulties, and some rely on oxygen assistance.
Phil Klara, an Associate Director in Product Marketing, shared his experience, emphasizing the emotional connection it provides to the Alpha-1 community. He mentioned, "Alpha-1 often results in reduced lung function and limited activity, but the Alpha-1 community remains steadfast in its mission to make a difference. I rode with an Alpha Angel patch, honoring those who have faced similar challenges. I'm hopeful that the foundation, with the support of all involved, can bring about significant improvements in the future."
The CSL team was also inspired by the remarkable Dee, an Alpha-1 patient who cycled an impressive 103 miles this year. She shared her perspective, stating, "Alpha-1 has presented me with challenges, but I've learned to adapt and keep moving forward. While I face limitations, I'm proud of my personal best of 103 miles. I rode not only for myself but for all Alpha-1 patients."
Emma Hatcher, CSL's Director of U.S. Advocacy, highlighted the event's impact, saying, "This bike trek offers a unique opportunity to connect with Alpha-1 patients on a personal level and witness the Alpha-1 Foundation's dedication to the community's well-being."
This annual tradition showcases CSL's commitment to supporting the Alpha-1 community, fostering a sense of unity and hope in the face of a challenging disease.
