Well, the major city-states all reached an agreement to basically seal the whole place off except for officially approved expeditions, because it's both really messed up and also full of valuable-but-extremely-dangerous Allagan tech, and nobody wants anyone accidentally unleashing that sh*t because there's all sorts of kill bots and such laying around.

Thanks for the responses! I had an idea that Cartenau was somewhere in or near greater Mor Dhona but, again, it doesn't seem to show up on maps of the Aldenard continent despite being, y'know, the site of the Calamity.

looking at maps of aldenard it DOES show up but on the sepia ones the text blends in to the terrain so much that I think unless you're looking at a physical one in your hands it's VERY hard to see.

The actual game zones are supposed to represent much, much larger geographic areas, just handwaved because video game, so you can literally fit entire forgotten crumbling cities and whatnot in the margins between areas

You can walk from ul'dah to ishgard in 20 minutes but that's supposed to represent a distance of like, Madrid to Stockholm, Eorzea is supposed to be continent-sized

I remember originally being annoyed at having separate zones that you need a loading screen for after being used to having the entire continent as one zone I could travel through without loading screens in World of Warcraft.

However, that lets them make very distinct zones without needing to have a whole lot of nothing inbetween the areas, or large transitions between climates, etc etc. Nowadays I'm fine with it.

I heard recently that in 1.0 it was more WoW like, in that there were just very long transition zones with a whole lot of nothing. TBH, I agree with you -- one of the things I hated about Daggerfall when I played it is that the sheer size of the world (it's the literal size of England) means that 99% of what's in it is Nothing. Miles and miles of Jack sh*t. I much prefer having smaller, more curated experiences.

(that said, bouncing between Guild Wars 2 and FFXIV, GW2 has W A Y better environmental design overall. But FFXIV kicks its ass at story and plot and making me cry about video games)

You can see some of the transitions still in the zone design. Where now you cut through the zone line to enter Ul Dah directly in front of the adventurer's guild, in 1.0 you went left or right at the gate down a tunnel to a smaller door to either side. The doors are still there, but closed.

...and when you are done with that; take a folding
chair to Creation and then suplex the Void.

Yeah, if you have to pick one thing to farm from this event the Falcon is the only one that's unobtainable by other means. The other stuff is a pain in the butt to a greater or lesser degree.

Does there happen to be a way to use a targeted ability on an ally without actually switching your normal target? I'm finding that that would come in very handy.

Mouseover macros or target-of-target macros, but combat macros in this game can be very finicky.

macros remove the ability to spellqueue whatever's inside them so it gets very awkward to play with them.

this is a solution best provided by a plugin if you really need it.

Resisting the FOMO from events has been key in staying excited for FFXIV. I didn't play ShB much at all after 5.2 until I started prepping for EW, and I really played EW since 6.05.

But at some point I'll start feeling it again and play the sh*t out of everything I missed.

I don't get much urge to get any mount in FFXIV because how often do you actually use them? It's only in the open world. I just ride my ceremonial Chocobo and leave it at that.

As a healer I do this for cures to cure a target of target. Whiel you can't Queue them, it's not a biggie to just hit the button a couple times if needed. Never had an issue with it in raid content either.

I am in this boat as well, though I did go way, far out of my way to get the hoverbike from FF12 mount. That and the chocobo are the only ones I need. Other people like collecting mounts, that's cool too. Just doesn't grab my completionism.

I'm finding that I'm quite enjoying using Astrologician in Frontline. Which is good, because I utterly loathe it in PvE. I think I might devote that part of the roulette solely to it.

I was just part of a decent stomp in the Borderland Ruins. It turns out that the outer objectives are primarily useful less as a means of gaining points, and more as a means of knowing where to target your roaming 24 person doomstack.

That's me with MCH and SAM. I can't really deal with them in PvE, but their PvP toolkit is a joy.

Is there much of a market for rare crafted stuff? I noticed that the lowest price for Horde Barding on the auction house right now is over half a million gil. I also noticed that the components for crafting Horde Barding on the auction house are not anywhere near half a million gil. If I make stuff like that, will it sell?

I've realized the value of the glamour dresser, and quickly ran out of prisms. As a trial account that can't access the marketplace, will picking up a crafting profession to make them be functional, or just require components I'll wanna buy from the marketplace anyway?

I'm thinking about buying and subscribing even though I haven't finished Heavensward yet because 3 family members want to play with me, and if we're all free trial we can't group together. So maybe I'll just put off the glamour depositing until I'm not trial and just buy them. It seems a "shame" to "waste" the trial before I've maxed it out, but I've sure as hell gotten tons of fun from it (PLD WHM and BLM at 50+) and paying for it is inevitable.
