Jeep Production Move: Canada-US Tensions Rise as Stellantis Shifts to Illinois (2025)

A major shift in the automotive industry is causing waves of tension between Canada and the United States. Stellantis, a global automaker, has decided to move its Jeep Compass production from Brampton, Ontario, to Illinois. This decision has ignited a firestorm of controversy, with Canadian leaders expressing outrage and calling for retaliatory measures.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford didn't mince words, directly blaming former U.S. President Donald Trump for the company's move. Ford's strong reaction underscores the economic stakes involved. The auto sector is a crucial part of Canada's economy, with autos being the second-largest export and employing a significant number of Canadians.

But here's where it gets controversial... The Canadian government is now facing a tough situation. They're currently negotiating to reduce tariffs with the U.S., but Trump has been aggressively pushing American automakers to shift production to the U.S.

Dominic LeBlanc, the minister responsible for Canada-U.S. trade, is in Washington this week for talks to reduce tariffs on certain sectors.

Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, has stated that Stellantis's decision is a direct result of existing tariffs. He has pledged to work with Stellantis to create new opportunities in the Brampton area, and the federal government is even threatening legal action against the company. Federal Industry Minister Mélanie Joly has called the production shift "unacceptable," pointing out that Stellantis received financial support from Canada based on commitments to Canadian production.

And this is the part most people miss... The impact of this decision extends beyond just the loss of production. The Stellantis assembly plant in Brampton had been closed in 2023, laying off approximately 3,000 workers. Now, the company is reopening its Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois, promising to create thousands of new jobs there.

Vito Beato, president of Unifor Local 1285, which represents the Brampton plant workers, expressed surprise at the news, as Stellantis had previously committed to producing the Jeep Compass in Brampton. Stellantis has stated that it continues to invest in Canada, including adding a third shift to its Windsor, Ontario assembly plant, and is in discussions with the government regarding the future of the Brampton facility.

Carney, who won the country's election earlier this year amid annexation threats and a trade war, has been trying to improve relations ahead of a review of the free trade deal next year. More than 75% of Canada’s exports go to the U.S., and Canada recently dropped many of its retaliatory tariffs to match U.S. tariff exemptions under the United States-Mexico-Canada trade pact.

Ford has urged Canada to respond to Trump’s tariffs with its own strong measures.
