In the world of California politics, a storm is brewing around former Rep. Katie Porter's gubernatorial aspirations. Recent videos have sparked a heated debate, raising questions about her temperament and leadership style.

The emergence of these videos has put Porter's campaign under intense scrutiny. In one instance, she threatened to end a TV interview, displaying a short fuse. And this is the part most people miss: a 2021 video shows her berating a staffer, an incident that has sparked a national conversation.
"It's a question of what comes next," says Christine Pelosi, a prominent Democratic activist. Porter's response to these incidents could make or break her chances in the 2026 race to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom.
In the video, Porter, a UC Irvine law professor, was asked about her support from Trump voters. Her response? She didn't need their support if she faced a Republican in the runoff. When the reporter followed up, Porter accused her of being argumentative and later said, "I don't want this all on camera."
The next day, another video surfaced, this time from 2021, where Porter lashed out at a staffer who corrected her on electric vehicle information. "Get out of my f— shot!" she exclaimed. A stark contrast to her image as a fearless inquisitor in Congress.
Porter has remained silent, only releasing a statement about the 2021 video, acknowledging her high standards and seeking to show gratitude to her staff.
Supporters, however, are standing by her. Peter Finn and Chris Griswold, co-chairs of Teamsters California, endorse Porter, arguing that the country needs strong leaders who aren't afraid to speak their minds.
But not everyone is convinced. Critics, including former Sen. Barbara Boxer, point to anger and a lack of respect displayed by Porter. Boxer, who backed Adam Schiff in the 2024 Senate race, believes Porter is unfit to serve.
"This video tells us everything we need to know," Boxer said. "She's proof that we must hold men and women to the same standard."
The debate extends beyond Porter's character. It's about the double standard women face in politics, says GOP strategist Beth Miller. While the bias has eased, incidents like these can set women back, she argues.
