A true legend's homecoming: Luke Keary's journey back to his rugby roots.
'Home is where the heart is,' and for NRL icon Luke Keary, that place is the Sydney Roosters. Despite an enticing offer from the Newcastle Knights, Keary has chosen to return to the club where he made his mark and won two premierships. But here's where it gets interesting...
Keary's decision to reject a coaching role with the Knights and instead opt for a smaller position with the Roosters has sparked curiosity. Is this a strategic move towards a head coaching role, or does Keary have other plans?
In an exclusive interview with Channel 9, Keary revealed, "I'm going back to the Roosters, and I can't wait. That's my home." He further clarified his intentions, stating, "Definitely not [a stepping stone]. I want to stay involved in coaching and share my knowledge with the younger players."
But Keary's ambitions extend beyond the field. He's also keen to explore the corporate side of the Roosters' operations, having expressed interest in the business and finance aspects of the club.
Keary's impressive career speaks for itself. He scored an impressive 48 tries in 231 NRL games, winning three premierships and representing both NSW and the Kangaroos. His time with the Rabbitohs and Roosters has left an indelible mark on the league.
"If someone had told me back when I was starting out, with no contract and playing in Burleigh, about this journey, I'd have thought they were crazy," Keary reflected.
So, what's next for Keary? Will his coaching role with the Roosters be a stepping stone to greater things, or is he content to stay within the club he calls home? And this is the part most people miss... Keary's decision to explore the corporate side of the game hints at a potential future beyond the field.
What do you think? Is Keary's move a strategic career choice, or a heartfelt return to his rugby family? Share your thoughts in the comments and let's discuss!
