Super Crispy Baked French Fries Recipe - BEST EVER! (2024)

Super crispy BAKED French fries recipe, anyone? They’re gluten free, vegan, low FODMAP and taste like fried chips… but they’re not!

My crispy baked French fries recipe is here! Of course, they’re super easy to make and you won’t believe they’re not fried. You can just cook them in the oven!

Mark and I are massive fans of oven chips on days where we don’t know what to cook/can’t be bothered to cook. But unless you buy the really basic frozen chips… they can actually get really expensive!

Some of them are really good in terms of *not* tasting like oven chips and tasting almost fried. But I thought I should create my own crispy baked french fries recipe instead… so I did.

And spoiler alert: you only need potatoes, oil and salt and pepper to make it happen. Yes, that’s all. I’m not sure I can even call that 4 ingredients, when 3 of them are oil and seasoning!

So the secret to making crispy fries isn’t a special or magic ingredient… then how do you get them like that?!

Well, if you’re searching for the ultimate crispy fry that’s golden on the outside with a little fluffiness in the middle, let me tell you how I manage it.

Firstly, your potato chopping skills have got to be nice and consistent – if you cut some too thick and some thinner, the fatter ones will never crisp and the thinner ones will likely burn. So make sure your knife is sharp, take it slowly if you need to as you’ll likely be more accurate.

Secondly, a super hot oven is essential. You cannot crisp up anything if your oven isn’t hot enough, so get it preheated nice and early. Lastly, please, please, please make sure you turn the fries half way.

That’s because

  • Usually the side touching the baking tray is the only side that gets colour – the crispiest side.
  • It allows all the steam to escape from the oven, meaning less moisture is in there, meaning less soggy fries and more crispy fries!

Make sense? Good! Here’s what you’ll need for my crispy baked french fries recipe…

Ingredients for my crispy baked French fries recipe

  • 900g potatoes (I used red Albert Bartlett potatoes but whites would work fine too)
  • 4 tbsp vegetable oil (plus extra for the baking tray)
  • salt
  • pepper
  • fresh chopped coriander to make it look fancy (optional)

Method for my crispy baked French fries recipe

1. Preheat your oven to 210C Fan / 230C. Make sure the oven is fully preheated before putting anything in there!

2. Peel your potatoes and cut your potatoes into approx batons approx 5-7cm by 1/2cm by 1/2cm.

You don’t have to be super precise but try and make them fairly even so they cook evenly. The more consistent your chopping is, the more consistently they’ll cook.

3. Place your cut potatoes in a large bowl add 3-4 tbsp of oil as well as some salt and pepper. Mix so all the batons are coated well in oil.

4. Drizzle a little extra oil onto a large baking tray (to ensure the chips don’t stick, you don’t need much). Then evenly spread the chips out.

5. Bake for about 25 minutes. (I always turn mine half way through so they colour on both sides)

Judge whether they are cooked by how you like them… I like mine golden and crispy! Enjoy!
