The Best Blackstone Fried Rice (Easy Griddle Recipe) (2024)

This Blackstone fried rice is one of my favorite griddle recipes, and it’s so easy to make! Start with cooked and cooled white rice, add in a few pantry ingredients and your choice of vegetables, and you’ve got an easy griddle fried rice recipe that the whole family will love!

Fried rice has got to be one of the most popular griddle recipes to make on a Blackstone griddle or other flat top grill. Probably because so many people buy a griddle to be able to make hibachi chicken at home, instead of having to go out to their favorite Japanese restaurant and drop a hundred bucks.

And of course, you can’t have hibachi chicken teriyaki without the fried rice. And the yum yum sauce.

But whether you serve this Blackstone fried rice as a side dish with your favorite teriyaki chicken or you add some cooked proteins in to make it a full meal, you’ll love being able to make restaurant quality fried rice on the griddle at home!

Why the Blackstone Griddle is Perfect for Making Fried Rice

If you’re familiar with griddle cooking, then you know that one of the benefits to owning a griddle is being able to cook a large amount of food at one time. That’s why the Blackstone griddle is perfect for meal prep, tailgating, or feeding a large family without having to dirty up 4 different pans.

And the same goes for fried rice… The large surface area of the griddle allows you plenty of space to cook a large amount of fried rice and all of the vegetables that you want to add in.

And by using your hot and cool zones, you can also move the rice around the griddle depending on what temperature that you need. Want to keep your rice warm while the rest of your hibachi chicken dinner cooks? Just move it to the cooler side of your griddle. Like the little crispy bits of fried rice that you get at Japanese steakhouses? Move the rice to the hotter area on the griddle so that it can get crispier.

A large griddle top also allows you to sauté vegetables and cook scrambled eggs at the same time as your rice is cooking. Then, you can toss everything together and add your soy sauce and seasonings, all while saving you from having to wash a bunch of different skillets or pans.

Blackstone Fried Rice Ingredients

Here are the ingredients that I used to make my Blackstone fried rice, perfect for preparing with your griddle chicken hibachi:

The Rice

You pretty much have two choices when deciding what type of rice to use for fried rice on the griddle: long grain white rice and Jasmine rice. But I personally use Jasmine rice for all of my fried rice dishes, because I think that it’s more flavorful than other white rice varieties.

Just be sure to buy regular uncooked rice… I find that the microwavable bags of rice tend to breakdown a bit on the griddle when you use them for fried rice.

And you’ll want to use COOKED and COOLED rice for making fried rice, so be sure to prepare your rice ahead of time.

The Seasonings and Sauces

If you want to make a Japanese style fried rice to go with your hibachi dinner, then you can add soy sauce, garlic powder, and salt and pepper. And don’t forget about a hefty portion of butter. The butter gives your fried rice a rich flavor and it helps the rice to get crispier on the griddle.

The Add-ins

What you add to your Blackstone fried rice is completely up to you… That’s the great thing about this recipe! Have extra peas or steamed broccoli from last night’s dinner? Add it to your fried rice! Need to get rid of some baby carrots in the fridge? You can dice them up for your griddle fried rice also.

Here are some common ingredients that you can add to your fried rice to make it more of a meal:

  • peas and carrots – I like to use the frozen bag blend of peas and diced carrots because it’s inexpensive and there’s no prep work involved. You could also use matchstick carrots.
  • diced onion
  • scrambled egg
  • broccoli
  • sesame seeds
  • sliced green onion – I like adding some green onions to my fried rice for a colorful garnish and an extra punch of flavor.
  • diced cooked proteins – Adding some meat like diced chicken, pork, or steak to your fried rice makes it more filling.

My Favorite Tool for Cooking Rice

To actually cook the white rice initially (before you “fry” it in butter on the griddle), you can just follow package instructions.

But I always cook rice in my favorite rice cooker, because it’s pretty much foolproof – You just add 2 cups of uncooked rice, the correct amount of water (according to package instructions), and press the “cook” button and the rice cooker does all of the work for you. Perfect rice every time!

For about $20, a good rice cooker like mine is a must-have small kitchen appliance! And BONUS – You can also use it to keep appetizer dips warm, similar to a small CrockPot.

How to Cook Fried Rice on the Blackstone Griddle

Here’s how to make this easy Blackstone fried rice recipe on your griddle:

Step 1: Cook the white rice a day early and refrigerate.

The key to making the best fried rice for your hibachi dinner is preparation and time. And that actually starts the day before you’re going to be making this Blackstone fried rice recipe.

So many people complain that their rice sticks together when it’s cooking or it gets too mushy on the griddle. That’s because the starches in the rice haven’t had a chance to “calm down” before cooking them again… Remember, fried rice is cooked twice – once to cook the rice and again to “fry” the cooked rice in butter or oil.

So you’ll need to make sure that your cooked rice is completely cooled before adding it to the griddle for fried rice. And I find it best to let it cool overnight in the refrigerator.

But before you start, you’ll need to rinse your rice to get rid of some of the starches. Simply add the rice to a mesh colander and rinse it in the sink with cold water.

Then, you can prepare the rice according to package instructions (or use the rice cooker that I mentioned above). When the rice is done cooking, spread it out into a thin layer on a large baking sheet and fluff it up with a fork or spatula like this:

Then, just slide the baking sheet into the refrigerator overnight and you’ll be ready to make the best Blackstone fried rice the next day.

*NOTE – Two cups of uncooked rice should give you about 6 cups of cooked rice.

Step 2: Cook the vegetables on the Blackstone griddle.

After your rice has fully cooled, you’re ready to start making this easy fried rice recipe. Preheat your griddle on low, and let it get to about 375-425 degrees F.

Then, add a bit of avocado oil (or your favorite cooking oil) to the surface and spread it around a bit with your spatula. Add the diced onions, peas, and carrots and begin sautéing them on the oiled surface. I like to cook the onions separately, because they take a bit longer to cook. Then, I mix all of the vegetables together and season them with salt and pepper.

Step 3: Add the cooked and cooled rice to the griddle.

When the vegetables are about halfway cooked through, add the cooled rice to the griddle. Your rice will probably be “clumpier” since it just came out of the refrigerator, so use your spatula to break it up as it begins to heat up.

When the rice is warmed through, create a “well” in the center and add half a stick of butter like this:

Step 4: Combine the fried rice, vegetables, soy sauce, and seasonings, and continue to cook.

As the butter melts in the “rice well”, you can add the other ingredients.

I like to pour the soy sauce on to the rice and then sprinkle on the garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

Then add the cooked vegetables and mix everything together.

The Best Blackstone Fried Rice (Easy Griddle Recipe) (7)

Now is the time to check for seasoning also. If you like more soy sauce or salt and pepper in your fried rice, go ahead and add it in now. And remember, you can always add seasonings and sauces, but you can’t take them away, so don’t overdo the soy sauce and seasonings right off the bat.

Step 5: Make scrambled eggs to add to your fried rice.

This step is completely optional, but if you like eggs in your fried rice, then now is the time to add them. Just scramble your eggs on the griddle until they’re still slightly wet, so they don’t over cook. Then, use your spatula to chop up the egg.

Add the eggs to the fried rice, mix everything together, and continue to cook the rice on the griddle until it’s done to your liking. My family loves the rice to be a bit crispy, so we like to leave it on the griddle for a little while.

Notice the browned bits that are kind of clumped together at the bottom? That’s how we like our fried rice done!

You can also move the fried rice to the side of your griddle while you prepare other foods. The rice will continue to cook slightly and crisp up on the bottom.

Then, when I’m ready to plate my dinner, I use the bench scraper to “cut” large rectangular portions of rice just like they do at a Japanese steakhouse:

Other Blackstone Fried Rice Recipe Ideas

This Blackstone fried rice goes perfectly with your hibachi chicken dinner, but here are some other variations that you can try on the griddle:

  • Add cooked cubed chicken, beef, or pork to your fried rice for a complete meal.
  • Add Mexican seasonings to your fried rice and top with white cheese dip, sautéed onions and bell peppers, and fajita chicken for a Mexican chicken fried rice.
  • Add shrimp and sausage for a Cajun fried rice.
  • Substitute cauliflower rice for a delicious and veggie-packed low carb meal.

FAQ’s about Making Blackstone Fried Rice

Can I make fried rice at home without a griddle?

Absolutely! If you don’t have an outdoor griddle, you can still make this easy fried rice recipe in a large skillet on your stovetop. Depending on how many people that you’re feeding, you may need to cook the fried rice in batches or use multiple skillets, that way you’re able to cook the rice in a thinner layer, giving you a crispier fried rice.

What rice should I use to make fried rice?

I always use Jasmine rice when making any type of fried rice recipe (even thisCajun Shrimp Fried Rice). I find Jasmine rice to be more flavorful with a nice and subtle sweetness, but you can also use long grain white rice.

Why is my fried rice sticking together?

If your fried rice is sticking or clumping together more like a sticky rice, then it’s probably because you didn’t rinse the white rice before cooking it or you didn’t let it properly cool down before adding it to the griddle to fry. These two important steps can help get rid of some of the starches and make your rice more fluffy and separated.

I also HIGHLY recommend that you cook your rice the day before and spread it in an even layer on a baking sheet to cool down in the fridge overnight. This helps to dry out the rice which also helps with making the best crispy fried rice.

What should I serve with fried rice?

This fried rice recipe is perfect to serve with Japanese style hibachi chicken on the griddle! You can check out this post for an easy and delicious Blackstone hibachi recipe complete with teriyaki chicken and zucchini and onions, just like you get at your favorite Japanese restaurant!

This Blackstone fried rice is super easy to prepare on your griddle. Start with cooked and cooled white rice, add in your favorite vegetables and some seasonings, and you've got a delicious fried rice that's perfect for serving with your hibachi dinner!

Ingredients

  • 6 cups cooked white rice cooled
  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil or your favorite cooking oil
  • 1 cup frozen peas and diced carrots
  • 1 cup diced onions
  • 1/2 stick butter
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1-2 tablespoons garlic powder
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 eggs optional

Instructions

  • Preheat griddle on low until it reaches about 375-425 degrees F.

  • Add about 1 tablespoon of avocado oil (or your favorite cooking oil) to the heated griddle and spread it around a bit with your spatula. Add the diced onions and peas and carrots blend to the oiled surface and sauté until tender.

  • When the vegetables are about halfway cooked through, move them to the side of the griddle, and add the cooled rice to the hotter zone on the griddle. The rice will probably be a bit clumpy since it is cooled, so use your spatula to loosen it and sauté it as it heats.

  • When rice is heated through, make a "well" in the center of the rice and add half a stick of butter. As the butter melts in the middle, add the soy sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to the rice. Add the cooked vegetables to the rice. Mix everything together. Add more soy sauce and seasonings at this time if you wish.

  • Cook two lightly beaten eggs on the griddle. Chop up the cooked eggs and mix them into the fried rice and vegetable mixture.

  • Continue to cook the fried rice on the griddle until it is crispy and done to your liking. Then, remove the fried rice from the griddle and serve warm with your favorite sauces or green onion garnish.

Notes

  • The amounts listed for soy sauce and garlic powder can be adjusted based on your tastes. When all of the fried rice is mixed together, taste for seasoning. If you like more soy sauce or salt and pepper in your fried rice, go ahead and add it. And remember, you can always add seasonings and sauces, but you can’t take them away, so don’t overdo the soy sauce and seasonings right off the bat.
  • Two cups of uncooked rice should yield about 6 cups of cooked rice.
